Future Beekeepers Competition - CLOSED

This year is the 150th Anniversary of the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) and the 100th Anniversary of Southport Flower Show; as a special celebration the Southport and District Beekeepers, who have a large tent at the Flower Show, will be running a Special one-off competition to design a logo for the branch. We are inviting school children to design the logo. Children do not have to be within a formal school environment, entries are permitted from home schooled children too.

There are two age categories 5-7 years and 8-11 years. To enter, children need to design what they feel would be an appropriate logo for use on our website (www.southportbeekeepers.co.uk), Facebook page, promotional material, at the Flower Show and on labels for jars of honey. Children need to be the relevant age for the age category on the closing date, the 21st June, and be living in the UK.

Designs can be in any media; paint, collage, coloured pencil etc., on either an A4 or A3 sheet, no bigger please.

Designs must take into consideration the usage, and scale of where the design will be used, given that most logo’s are used at small scale for instance on a label on a jar of honey (and very large – example on exhibition panels). The design must incorporate the name: Southport and District Beekeepers.

The design has to be a child’s original work - they must not copy someone else's. Any entry deemed to be a copy by our judges will be disqualified.

Please note that there is no guarantee that the winning logo will be used by the Branch, although the essence of the design may be.

When is the competition open?

The competition is now open and submissions will close at 20:00 on 21st June 2024. Judging will take place on the 1st July 2024 and will be announced on the 5th July 2024. Only the winners will be notified.

How do I submit the designs?

Please put the child’s name, age and either address of school or home together with an adult email address for contact on the back of the entry.

Each entry must contain this information, schools MUST NOT group together entries and send a single batch with one lot of contact details. Schools can however mail all entries together.

Submissions should then be sent to, or can also be delivered in person to:

Southport and District Beekeepers, 5 Mersey Avenue, Formby, L37 7BS

Or

Southport and District Beekeepers, 29 Wood Moss Lane, Scarisbrick, L40 9RJ

Please note we are unable to return any entries and cannot guarantee that entries have been received by post.

The winner

Schools or the individuals will be notified of the winning entries in each age category before the schools close for summer, so the 5th July.

The winning Gold entry, together with those coming in Silver and Bronze places will be displayed at The Southport Flower Show in the Bee Tent.

What is the prize?

In addition to being on display at the Flower Show, the top 6 finalists (3 in each age category) will be invited attend The Southport Flower Show along with their families (two adult tickets per winner, children can attend for free). In addition, they will also receive an age-appropriate book about bees and beekeeping. The Gold winner in each category will also win a Hobby Craft Gift Voucher.

The school where the winning child is from will also have the opportunity to have beekeepers attend and give a talk on bees and beekeeping, along with a live bee demonstration (no bees will be allowed to fly round so this is a perfectly safe environment).

Judging

What are the criteria for judging the designs?

Entries will be judged on the following criteria:

·       Originality

·       Suitability

·       Knowledge of bees

How are the designs judged?

The judging will be done by a group of beekeepers which will include parents, teachers and teaching assistants.

If I’ve missed the submission deadline, can still I enter?

Unfortunately, once the 8pm deadline on the 21st June 2024 has passed, entries will not be accepted.

Can a child submit more than one design?

Only one design may be entered per child and it has to be all the child’s own work. If you enter more than one for a child then we'll only consider the first submission as part of the competition.
