‘Minutes’ of March 20th Branch Meeting
Preparing the site for the Branch Apiary

The site of our new Branch Apiary was certainly a hive of activity as it was quickly transformed from a wild, unkempt patch of land to a very impressive new facility.  Despite the wet start to the day the weather was kind to us and we enjoyed dry, mild conditions.

Many, many thanks to all members and their friends and family who worked hard to complete the task.  To form a base for each of the three hives paving stones were laid level on a bed of sand.  Wood chippings were then spread around the site and levelled to create an attractive surface that will help surpress weed growth.

The area around the apiary already has shrubs, trees and daffodils.  To add to the springtime  interest snowdrops ‘in the green’ were supplied by a member and planted at the edge of the apiary.

Thanks to Rosemary who provided use of her kitchen and copious amounts of tea to the workforce.  She also acted as official photographer.  The photos should soon be on the website.

The Branch has purchased new hives from our own Gary Bleasdale.  They look marvellous in their new home and when the bees arrive I’m sure that they’ll be very happy.

When the job was completed there was a hearty lunch – many thanks to Rob and Lisa for the delicious stew.

The Branch Apiary is an excellent facility that will be used for practical training courses and workshop sessions for both new and existing members.  We were all very pleased that some new members who will be participating in our Course in April came along to help and learn more about beekeeping.
