Bees for Development Fundraising Garden Party.
A Bring and Buy Sale held by Southport and Formby Beekeepers raised the fantastic sum of £500 for Bees for Development. The event was held in the lovely garden of branch Chairman John Turner and his wife Rosemary on the afternoon of Saturday 20th June.
Although the weather was typical for an English summer, more than 60 people attended the event, and enjoyed listening to a live jazz band from local Merchant Taylors School for Boys, who kindly donated their time to play at the event. Incidentally, Merchant Taylors is the only school in the country with its own apiary, and budding beekeepers.
Stalls were packed with donations of homemade produce such as jams, cakes, breads, elderflower cordials, garden plants, fresh home grown vegetables, free range eggs, as well as books and bric-a-brac. Glasses of refreshing Pimms were available, garnished with home grown borage and mint.
In return for a small donation, delicious home made scones with jam and cream and hot drinks were enjoyed by the visitors. Other attractions included a prize raffle, a quiz to guess the number of jelly beans in a honey jar, and a very popular car washing service – again thanks to the boys from Merchants.
Bees for Development leaflets were available for visitors to take away, and posters displaying the work that the charity carries out were on display, generating a lot of interest.
Secretary Francine Sagar commented, “Just because we here in England can afford to keep bees as a hobby, we shouldn’t lose sight of the plight of less fortunate people for whom beekeeping can alleviate acute poverty. Fund-raising for Bees for Development whilst having fun has put us all in a win-win situation.”
